about

Written about The Siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War of the early ‘90s, this song brings into focus the suffering of a civilian population caught helpless in the snipers’ crosshairs, with prayer their only hope. Carole Rowe’s viola arrangement, Ken’s acoustic guitar, and Dennis Pendrith’s bass coalesce to create a haunting memorial to the victims of war.

lyrics

Oh Sasha, make your body move
Make your lips and fingertips, an undulating groove
Oh Sasha, get your bucket too
Fetch some water for the kids, and then some candy too
For in this town we’re going to die, we’re going to die

Oh Peter, run the corridor fast
You don’t have to be the first, just don’t be the last
Oh Peter, see the tombstone eyes
In the UNies, in the cameras, don’t be so surprised
That in this town we’re going to die, we’re going to die

Oh Mary, hope it isn’t true
That this war is coming to a neighbourhood near you
Oh Buddha, save the planet soon
Stop the hatred, stop the bombing, take us to the moon
For in this town we’re going to die, we’re going to die

Oh Yahweh, can you hear us too?
Slimy bits of protoplasm, calling out for you
Oh Mohammed, take us where we stand
There’s no way in God’s creation, we’ll give us this land
In this town we’re going to die, we’re going to die

Oh Sasha, make your body move
Make your lips and fingertips, an undulating groove
Oh Sasha, get your bucket too
Fetch some water for the kids, and then some candy too
For in this town we’re going to die, we’re going to die
